Welcome to the Fort Mill SC History Museum
A-Dressing Jehossee: Everyday Clothing of An Antibellum Island PlantationThe Fort Mill History Museum and Winthrop alumna and current graduate student Alison Boulton will open the summer with the exhibition A-Dressing Jehossee: Everyday Clothing of An Antebellum Island Plantation. The exhibit includes a collection of more than 20 pieces with dresses for children, women and enslaved members of the household.
These fashions were worn on the rice plantation known as Jehossee located on Jehossee Island south of Charleston. Boulton spent hours studying the history of the plantation family and ladies' fashions of the time, including sketches from "Godey's Lady's Book," a fashion-oriented publication which she called "the Vogue of that time."
Alison was not only consistent with her painstakingly accurate stitching; she also used sewing techniques authentic to the time period. For Boulton the study of clothing is the truest form of history. She believes "it is the closest one can come to the people who are long gone."
The Fort Mill History Museum is formed to provide a place where local history is collected and research is performed so people can visit and actively participate in the preservation and enjoyment of the past. The museum will collect, display and preserve all necessary artifacts, cultural writings, documents, photographs, film footage and related historical treasures that contributed to the development of Fort Mill, South Carolina and its outlying locales. This collection will be used to educate and give a tangible understanding of the stages of development of the town, its people and industry.
Programs will be provided that enhance the understanding and education of local history both within the museum and to external locations such as historical tours/sites, schools and civic organizations.
Exhibits will consist of museum owned items and periodic scheduled private on-loan collections.
